About Me
The Basics
Howdy, my name is Taz! ðŸ¤
I’m a tech nerd and content creator from the United Kingdom. I post all sorts of stuff, but much of it evolves around GNU/Linux (and other UNIX-like systems), Free Software, Privacy, and Self-Hosting.
I post my content to YouTube, Odysee, and PeerTube. For a long time, I went under the name GNULectures, but recently (March 2026) renamed it to NapoleonTech because I felt GNULectures sounded too formal and people had issues finding my channel.
Technology
I’ve been interested in tech from a young age. I didn’t have my own computer until I was about 9 years old, but I frequently used the family computers… flash games, Purble Place, MS Paint, Club Penguin, theming Vista to look like Mac OS X or XP (just typical 2000s stuff).
Although I was interested in tech as a kid, I was a passive consooooomer and didn’t know a whole lot about it until I built my first PC in 2017. In 2020, I started using GNU/Linux. For a while, I used to dual-boot Linux and Windows, but I now run Linux exclusively.
Using a different OS may not sound life-changing, and initially it wasn’t, but through using Linux I was exposed to a bunch of concepts I previously couldn’t even comprehend.
Today, I have a love-hate relationship with tech. I enjoy experimenting with technology and feel the content I produce reflects that. However, I hate how tech is actually implemented in the modern world (e.g., AI replacing people’s jobs, tech being used for mass surveillance).
I’m a big proponent of Free (Libre) Software that respects your freedom. Though admittedly, I do use some non-free software (Steam and DaVinci Resolve).
Beyond Tech
Travelling
I enjoy travelling, though currently I haven’t ventured far outside of Europe. If a genie offered to teleport me somewhere else, I would have a hard time deciding where to go :D
Here are the countries/territories I’ve been to so far: United Kingdom (duh), Jersey, Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Poland, Czech Republic.
As for the UK, I’ve been to all the constituent countries except Northern Ireland. I’ve also visited some very remote parts of the country (e.g., Anglesey, Snowdonia, Isles of Scilly, Scottish Highlands).
Cars (and other vehicles)
I’m somewhat of a petrolhead. Though interestingly, I actually prefer “sporty” versions of regular cars (e.g., Fiesta ST, E36 M3, E46 M3, MX-5, RX-8, Civic Type R, Trueno AE86… big up Initial D fans) over high-end sports cars (wHaT coLoUr iS Ur buGaTti?!).
Unfortunately, actually having a car is a pain both logistically and financially. Car-centric urbanism is somehow bad for both drivers and non-drivers. It’d be great to live somewhere where car ownership is optional rather than mandatory.
At some point, I’d like to build my own e-bike. Although local laws limit the kind of e-bike which can be built before it’s legally classed as a moped.
Site Information
This site was made with Hugo. A minimal static site generator written in Go. My VPS provider is contabo.
When I first tried Hugo, I couldn’t get the hang of it and kept getting errors so I used to just write my site in raw HTML and CSS.
