Changes to my website
Ditching self-hosted email
With my previous web server, I had been using Luke Smith’s emailwiz script. However, I abandoned it for two reasons:
-
The script hasn’t been updated in a few years, so I ran into issues. I can’t remember if the issues were with postfix or dovecot, but I wasn’t able to resolve it.
-
If I sent an email to someone using a mainstream mail service (e.g., Gmail, Outlook), it would be flagged as spam, even if they’re the one who initiated the conversation and I’m simply replying.
Switching to Hugo
Hugo is a minimal static site generator written in Go.
I used to write everything on my website in raw HTML and CSS since I had issues with Hugo on my system. Basically, the version of hugo in my distro’s repositories were outdated.
Also, a lot of themes depend on the extended version of Hugo. Thankfully, this was easy to resolve by just compiling Hugo from source.
RSS functionality
This is the main reason I wanted to use Hugo in the first place. You can create one manually, but it’s a lot less convenient so I just never really bothered.
New PeerTube Instance
Although I already post to YouTube and Odysee/LBRY, I wanted to also host my own PeerTube instance.
PeerTube is a decentralised, federated video-sharing platform. My instance only stores my own videos, but if you have a PeerTube instance elsewhere or you use the PeerTube Mobile App, you can subscribe to me from there.
OS Update
I use a newer version of Debian… honestly not that exciting lol. I considered Alpine Linux or FreeBSD, but Debian has been rock solid for me, so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
